BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman Kyle Parker, making his first career start, held California to two runs on seven hits over six innings to lead the Washington baseball team to a 7-4 win over the Golden Bears in the second game of a Pac-10 series Saturday at Evans Diamond. The UW victory evened the three-game series at one win apiece.
Parker (1-0), a right-hander from Yakima's West Valley High, was inserted into the starting rotation this weekend after seven relief outings this year. The win improved the UW's record to 16-8-1 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-10 while Cal dropped to 17-18 and 4-4.
The Huskies got four RBIs and a three-run homer from DH Matt Lane, a freshman from Port Angeles, while junior center fielder Taylor Johnson went 3-for-4 with a stolen base.
Washington busted out with a two-out rally in the third inning. With two down and none on, Brent Lillibridge singled and stole second. A single from Greg Isaacson sent home Lillibridge and Zach Clem was hit by a pitch to put two runners on board. Lane followed with a home run to center, his second of season. Junior catcher Aaron Hathaway made it back-to-back homers when he drove one out to left, staking the Huskies with a 5-0 lead.
In the fifth, Washington tacked on two more to increase the lead to 7-0. Isaacson reached on an error by Cal shortstop Jeff Dragicevich and moved to third on a double from Zach Clem. After Matt Swanson came on in relief of Bears starter Mike Padgett, a groundout from Lane sent Isaacson home. Clem later scored on a single from John Otness.
California finally broke through for a run in the fifith. With two outs and runners at first and second on a walk and a single, first baseman Allen Craig laced a double down the third-base line, driving home Brian Horwitz with the Bears' first run.
Cal center fielder David Weiner led off the sixth inning with his second homer of the weekend and sixth of the season, cutting the Husky lead to 7-2.
In the eighth, the Bears put together a rally. With one run already in and the bases loaded with one out, UW closer Will Fenton came on to replace David Dowling. Fenton walked Horwitz to force in a run, but then struck out pinch hitters Jordan Karnofsky and Brennan Boesch to keep the Huskies on top, 7-4. Fenton allowed a leadoff single in the ninth, but recorded the final three outs in order to pick up his fourth save.
Padgett (2-4) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits over four-plus innings.
Craig, Cal's first baseman, went 3-for-5 with a double and also turned in two spectacular defensive plays, diving to take away a pair of Husky hits.
The Huskies and Bears decide the three-game series Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. game.
