Huskies Fall To OSU, 6-4, In 12 Innings

SEATTLE - Oregon State right fielder Mike Hass drove in two runs with a two-out bases loaded single in the 12th inning to lift the Beavers to a marathon, 6-4 win over Washington Tuesday at Husky Ballpark.
The win gave the Beavers (21-11) a sweep of the two-game, non-conference series. Washington, which has lost three straight and four of its last five, fell to 19-12-1. The game took four hours and 40 minutes to complete.
The Huskies had scored single runs in the eighth, ninth and 11th innings, all on runs batted in by junior catcher Aaron Hathaway to keep the game going, but couldn't come up with anything in the 12th.
In the top of the 12th, the Beavers loaded the bases with two walks and a single off of three different UW relievers. Hass followed with a hard liner to center off of freshman Kyle Parker to drive home two. Husky closer Will Fenton (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run in the 11th and the first of the two in the 12th.
OSU's Jared Sanders (1-0) got the final out of the 11th and retired the Huskies in order in the ninth to earn the win.
The Beavers took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th, taking advantage of an error and a walk to score an unearned run on an RBI single from Paul Richie. In the bottom of the 11th, the Huskies had runners at first and third with one out when Hathaway sent a soft liner towards the hole between first and second. OSU second baseman Chad Schroeder stretched to make the catch, but the ball went off his glove, allowing Greg Isaacson to score from third. OSU managed to get the force at second, allowing Hathaway to reach on the RBI fielder's choice.
The Huskies, shut out since scoring a lone run in the second, entered the bottom of the eighth trailing 3-1. Hathaway belted a one-out, solo homer, his fifth of the season, to get the UW back to within a run.
In the ninth, junior Nick Batkoski started a rally with a one-out double. After a second out, Hathaway came through again, dumping an 0-2 pitch from Nathan Pendley into right, scoring pinch runner Nick Burnham to tie the game at 3-3.
Husky freshman starter Tim Lincecum threw five innings, but didn't figure in the decision. He allowed two runs on only one hit while walking nine and striking out 10, six of which came on called third strikes. Only a bit past halfway through the season, Lincecum's league-leading 87 strikeouts are good for sixth in UW single-season history. Jeff Heaverlo holds the school record with 131.
Lincecum struggled with his control in the first, walking four straight batters to force in a run after getting the leadoff hitter to ground out. After the fourth walk, however, Lincecum struck out Mike Hass and Andy Jenkins on called third strikes to end the inning with the bases loaded and only one run across.
The control problems continued in the second as Lincecum hit Billy Munich and walked Schroeder. After a bunt moved the runners up, a groundout from Aaron Mathews sent Munich home and the Beavers led 2-0 without the benefit of a hit.
Washington cut the lead in half in the second when Hathaway walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on Zach Clem single and scored on a John Otness groundout.
Oregon State added a run in the eighth as pinch hitter Paul Richie singled to lead off and eventually scored on a two-out single from Mathews.
This Friday through Sunday, the UW travels to face Georgia Tech for a three-game series in Atlanta. Friday and Saturday, game time is 7:00 p.m. EDT (4:00 p.m. PDT) and Sunday's game begins at 1:00 p.m. EDT (10:00 a.m. PDT). All three games will air live on KKNW AM-1150, with Sunday's finale airing on tape delay beginning at noon Pacific time.
