ATLANTA - The Washington baseball team committed a season-high four errors and ran its losing streak to four games, also a season-high, as Georgia Tech beat the Huskies, 8-4, Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium in the first of a three-game series.
The Huskies, who lost last Saturday to Washington State before dropping two non-conference games to Oregon State last Monday and Tuesday, fell to 19-13-1 on the season while Georgia Tech, a preseason top-five team that has also struggled some lately, improved to 21-15.
Tech starter Andrew Kown (5-1) allowed three runs on six hits over six and two-thirds innings to record the win. Husky freshman starter Kyle Parker (1-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven in five and one-third innings.
Georgia Tech went on top with a run in the first inning. Leadoff man Eric Patterson singled up the middle to start it. Patterson then stole his ACC-leading 25th base of the season to move to second base before a single from Brandon Boggs drove him in to give the Jackets a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies headed into the fifth inning still in search of their first hit. They got it when freshman designated hitter Matt Lane led off with a sharp single to center. After an out, senior right fielder Ben Johnson lined his fourth homer of the season to right field, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
Washington added to that lead in the sixth when Zach Clem singled, stole second and scored on a single from catcher Aaron Hathaway.
The Yellowjackets, held to only one hit after the first inning, got the bats going once again in the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out. Shortstop Tyler Greene followed with a single to left to send home Micah Owings and Steven Blackwood, tying the game at 3-3 and chasing UW freshman starter Kyle Parker from the game.
With Trent Baysinger on in relief, catcher Andy Hawranick belted a double that rolled to the wall in right, driving in Clifton Remole and Greene. After Patterson reached on an error by second baseman Greg Isaacson, Wes Hodges drove in Hawranick when his grounder to short was misplayed by Brent Lillibridge, increasing the Tech lead to 6-3. Baysinger fanned Boggs and Owings to finally get out of the inning.
The Yellowjackets took advantage of another pair of UW errors in the seventh, scoring a seventh run. In the top of the eighth, Clem led off with his ninth home run of the year to make it 7-4. Tech made it 8-4 in the bottom of the eighth. After two singles, Mike Nickeas laid down a squeeze but to score Owings from third.
Saturday, the Yellowjackets and Huskies play another 7:00 p.m. (4:00 p.m. PDT) game. Sunday's finale begins at 1:00 p.m. EDT (10:00 a.m. PDT). Saturday's game will air live on KKNW AM- 1150, with Sunday's airing on tape delay beginning at noon Pacific time.
