SEATTLE - Seniors Andrea Lalum and Giuliana Mendiola refused to let their final seasons at Washington come to a close Friday, combining for 42 points and 20 rebounds to lead UW to a 71-59 win over Pepperdine in first-round action of the Women's National Invitation Tournament at Bank of America Arena.
The Huskies (18-12) will host Creighton - 79-68 winners Friday at Colorado State - in a second-round WNIT game on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Washington jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, holding Pepperdine (17-13) without a basket for nearly six minutes to start the game. A 22-8 run midway through the first half blew the Huskies' lead out to 18, at 35-17, and while the Waves would make several second-half runs, they would not come any closer than the 12-point final margin.
Lalum's 22 points and 11 rebounds, the latter a season-high, gave the Husky senior her second double-double of the season, and the 11th of her UW career. Mendiola just missed a double-double of her own with 20 points and nine rebounds, but added six assists to surpass her own single-season UW assists record, set just last year. The senior's 666 career assists are 107 more than any other player in Washington history.
