
Softball Defeats Texas Tech & Texas A&M

TEMPE, Ariz. - The fifth-ranked Washington softball team (9-1) defeated Texas Tech 6-0 and 18th-ranked Texas A&M 4-2 to improve to 4-0 at the Fiesta Bowl Classic.
Junior Ashley Boek (3-0) picked up the shutout victory over TTU, scattering three hits and striking out seven. Senior All-American Tia Bollinger (5-1) tossed a two-hitter against TAMU, while striking out eight.
Freshman Dominique Lastrapes stretched her hitting steak to nine games, hitting 4-for-7 and driving in three runs. Seniors Courtney Jeffries and Rita Roach each had three hits for UW.
The Huskies opened the Texas Tech game with three runs in the third inning. Jeffries kicked off the rally with a double to left field and scored on a Lastrapes single to right-centerfield. Roach followed with an infield single and scored along with Lastrapes on a double by Kristen Rivera to left field.
Washington scored three more runs in the sixth inning on three hits. Oleson led off the frame with a single to right field, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Callie Bergan. Jeffries reached base on a hit by pitch and freshman Robyn Wike followed with a single to left field to score Oleson. Lastrapes then hit a two-run single to give UW the 6-0 advantage.
Texas A&M took the early lead in the nightcap, capitalizing on three Husky errors in the first inning to score two runs.
Washington fought back in the fifth inning when sophomore Sarah Hyatt hit her third home run of the tournament to cut the Aggie lead to one.
The Huskies scored three runs in the sixth inning on three hits and a pair of TAMU errors. River drew a leadoff walk and was replaced at first by Jessica Wilkinson. Wilkinson drew an offline throw from the catcher to advance to second. Kathy Fiske drew a walk and the runners moved to second and third on a passed ball. Dena Tyson smacked a two run double up the middle to give Washington the lead and Jeffries singled through the left side to put UW up 4-2.
Washington rounds out tournament action tomorrow with an 8 a.m. game vs. Dayton and a 10 a.m. match-up against Massachusetts.
