
Softball Sweeps Field At Fiesta Bowl Classic

TEMPE, Ariz.- The fifth-ranked Washington softball team (10-1) completed its weekend sweep of Fiesta Bowl opponents, defeating Dayton 10-2 and Massachusetts 5-2. The Huskies finish the weekend with a 6-0 mark.
Ashley Boek (4-0) picked up the victory over Dayton, scattering four hits over five innings and striking out five. All-American Tia Bollinger (6-1) earned the win over UMass with 10 strikeouts.
Kristen Rivera led the Dawgs with five hits this afternoon, including a 4-for-4 performance against the Minutewomen. Freshman Dominique Lastrapes continued her strong showing at the plate, extending her hitting streak to 11 games.
Washington opened game one with three runs against Dayton in the first inning. The Huskies loaded the bases with an infield single by Rita Roach and two walks. Callie Bergan then singled to score one. Senior Courtney Jeffries lined a shot into leftfield to score another. Sarah Hyatt scored on a passed ball to put UW on top 3-0.
The Huskies scored two more runs in the second inning on four hits. Roach sparked the two out rally with a double down the left field line and scored on an Oleson single. Rivera followed with a single to left field and a single by Hyatt scored Oleson to give Washington the 5-0 advantage.
UW added another run in the third inning when Robyn Wike reached on an error and scored on a passed ball.
Dayton came to life in the top of the fourth inning, cutting Washington's lead to three with a pair of runs. The Flyers led off the frame with three consecutive hits, including a two-RBI double by Tiffany Ward.
Washington scored two more runs in the fourth on a RBI double by Bergan and a two-run single to Wike to push its lead to seven runs at the 9-2 mark.
The Huskies put the game away in the fifth as a pair of UW singles and a Dayton error gave Washington the eight run advantage to invoke the mercy rule.
In the nightcap, the Dawgs scored one run in the first inning. Rivera singled and scored on two walks and a dropped fly ball by the centerfielder.
Massachusetts took the lead in the top of the second frame with a two-run homerun by KJ Kelley.
The Huskies regained the lead in the fourth when Dena Tyson hit a three-run homerun over the left-centerfield fence.
UW added an insurance run in the fifth on a solo home run by Rivera.
The Huskies finish the tournament with a 6-0 mark, out scoring its opponents 50-11. Lastrapes led all players with a .565 average and 13 hits. Seven players hit .400 or better.
