WASHINGTON
HEAD COACH JUNE DAUGHTERY
General Comments: "I thought the second half at UCLA we made some really big strides, especially the younger kids. We were able to build on those things this week. Defensively, we wanted to get back up pressuring and in our rotations again. Offensively, we wanted to be stronger and move the basketball in our motion better and we did both those things tonight. We did a solid job defending all their players and it's exciting to see how our players played tonight."
On inside game: "I thought Lalum did a good job down low tonight and when she was covered, she did a good job getting it to an open player outside. That was definitely a big point of emphasis going into this game."
On Breanne Watson: "She's in the gym a lot and she's really working hard on shooting and it's great to see it all come together for her. I thought she ran the floor great, these guys found her and got her some easy looks and then the basket gets a little bit bigger every time."
On man-to-man defense: "We were very concerned with their three point shooting. They're so big inside, but they also have great touch from three. We really had to stay disciplined and on ballside, that's something we've harped on."
On Jill Bell: "We're asking from Jill to provide more energy and intensity. The crowd gets excited and her teammates get excited when she gets up and works as hard as she does. Obviously the best way for her to bring more energy is to get up and get rebounds which she is doing well."
GUARD Giuliana Mendiola
On victory: "I think it was huge. It showed we have confidence in one another and we still believe in one another. The season's far from over and there's a lot of basketball left. Our intensity was really high, especially defensively to start the game and it just rolled from there."
On defensive intensity and rebounding: "Jill was killing on the boards. If she can have 13 rebounds in 18 minutes, that's awesome. Everyone brought the intensity and it was great to see us play together. Hopefully we can keep on improving on it."
FORWARD Breanne Watson
On performance: "I was just running the floor and getting the open lanes. My teammates were hitting me and I converted all my lay-ups. I've been kind of tentative on the perimeter this season because I don't feel it's my place to score. When I'm open I'll take the shot and when I was on the baseline the hoop looked like the ocean."
On needing a player to step up: "Everybody's been talking about it, but anybody on any night can step up. Tonight, it was my opportunity and I was able to do what I'm supposed to do. I was just running the floor and getting the ball in my hands and I was hitting my shots tonight. I had the opportunity and I put them in."
