SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team will head into its big weekend series at USC on a four-game winning streak after completing a two-game sweep of Portland with a 8- 4 win Wednesday afternoon at Husky Ballpark.
Sophomore second baseman Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen) led the Husky offense with three runs batted in while senior Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) and freshmen Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) and Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview) each contributed two of the Huskies' 11 hits on the day.
After neither team mounted much of a threat through the first three and a half innings, the UW finally broke open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Right fielder Taylor Johnson led off the inning with a solo homer, his second in as many days against the Pilots and third of the season. After two walks and a single loaded the bases, leadoff hitter Isaacson singled to center to plate two runs, giving the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
Former Husky and current UP first baseman Matt Hollod answered for his new team in the top of the fifth as he led off with a home run, his fourth of the year. Washington got the lead back to three runs in the bottom of the fifth when Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) doubled off the wall in center field and scored when Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) laced a double down the left- field line.
The Pilots pulled two runs back in the sixth on run-scoring singles from DH Bryan Dearinger and second baseman Jared Mora, cutting the UW lead to 4-3. Washington added a fifth run in the bottom of the inning when a two-out single from Larsen drove in Isaacson, who had walked.
Washington (24-20-1) got three more in the seventh to put the game away. Done drove in Johnson with a single before scoring on a fielder's choice from Isaacson. Freshman Nick Batkoski (Federal Way), who had doubled, scored on a wild pitch to give Washington an 8-3 lead.
Husky senior Zack Daniels (Fircrest/Charles Wright) picked up his first win of the season (1-0), allowing one run on four hits in five innings of work. UP reliever Jeff Cambers, from Shoreline, took the loss, surrendering three runs in an inning and one-third. Hollod, who tripled and scored in the eighth, led the offense for Portland (21-25) while Mora finished 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Next up, the Huskies travel to face No. 20 USC in a battle for Pac-10 supremacy. The Huskies (10-5 in league play enter the three-game series at Dedeaux Field one game behind the first-place Trojans, who are 11-4 in the Pac-10. All three games -- Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. -- will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
