LOS ANGELES - The Washington baseball team dropped into a tie for second place in the Pac-10 Friday night as USC's Anthony Reyes pitched the 20th-ranked Trojans to a 4-1 win at Dedeaux Field.
The win kept the Trojans (12-4 Pac-10, 29-18 overall) in first place, two games ahead of Washington (10-6, 24-21-1) and the winner of Friday evening's Stanford-Arizona State game.
Reyes, a preseason All-American and the top pitcher for the U.S. National Team last summer, picked up his fourth win to improve to 4-0. Reyes, who spent the first half of the season recovering from an elbow injury, had his longest outing of the year, allowing a run on six hits while striking out eight in eight innings.
USC closer Cory Campos threw the ninth, allowing a single, but getting a double play for his fourth save of the season.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the sixth, USC third baseman Jon Brewster belted a two-out double to center field to drive in Anthony Lunetta and David Gordon. In seventh, the Trojans added insurance when catcher Alberto Concepcion doubled down the right field line and scored on a single from Bill Peavey to give the Trojans a 4-1 edge.
Husky senior ace Shawn Kohn (9-4) suffered his second consecutive loss. The right- hander from Woodinville threw his sixth complete game of the season, but gave up at least one hit in each of the first seven innings for a total of 10 on the night.
USC put runners aboard in each of the first three innings, and in fact had runners at second and third with one out in the second, but didn't score until the fourth. Peavey led off the inning by reaching base on a throwing error by Husky second baseman Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen). Freshman Joey Metropoulos followed with a double into the left-center gap and Peavey scored all the way from first.
Washington tied the game with a run in the sixth. With two outs, freshman catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) singled through the right side. Hathaway stole second and moved to third on a passed ball before freshman Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) dropped a single into shallow right field to drive home Hathaway.
The Huskies and Trojans play again Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The game will air live in Seattle on KKNW AM-1150.
