Alex Vlaski Pulls off Upset to Advance to Second Round of NCAA Tennis Tourney

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Washington freshman Alex Vlaski (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) upset 14th-ranked Daniel Klemetz of Middle Tennessee State Wednesday afternoon, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships on the campus of Texas A&M University.
"Alex was actually down a break in the second set," said eighth year head coach Matt Anger. "But he fought off some heat exhaustion and pulled out a 6-4 win in the third."
Vlaski, who was named both the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Region Eight Rookie of the Year, now holds a 26-8 overall record on the season. He will face Stanford's David Martin in the second round of the singles tournament Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. PDT (10:00 a.m. CDT).
Junior Matt Hanlin (Birmingham, England), who was competing in the singles championships for the second straight season, was defeated by 16th-ranked Bobby Reynolds of Vanderbilt in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Hanlin finishes his third season with a 24-8 overall mark.
"Matt was playing well and I thought he could win," continued Anger. "It was very windy and unfortunately his opponent just dealt better with the weather conditions."
The Huskies are coming off a season in which they recorded their second consecutive Sweet 16 appearance, finishing the year at 19-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
