SEATTLE - Sophomore Clay Johnson threw his first career complete game as the Washington baseball team snapped a seven-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 6-4 win over UC Irvine in the first of two non-conference games vs. the Anteaters.
Johnson, a righty from Elma, Wash., worked the full nine innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and no walks as the Huskies' record improved to 13-15-1. Irvine starter Glenn Swanson, who has notched victories over Pac-10 opponents USC and UCLA this season, suffered the loss to fall to 6-3. Swanson allowed six runs, though only two were earned, over three innings of work as UCI fell to 21- 17.
The Anteaters opened the scoring in the game in the second inning. Chris Klemm doubled to lead off the inning and an infield single off the bat of Steve Guthrie put runners at first and second. After the two runners stole second and third base, a hard ground ball by second baseman Elliot Salcedo took a bad hop to get by UW third baseman Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) for a two-run single and UCI led 2-0.
The Huskies came back quickly with two runs in the bottom of the second. Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/ Meadowdale) led off with a single and advanced to third on a bobble and a bad throw by the UCI center and left fielders. Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) doubled to drive in Davidson and eventually scored when Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen) reached on a bunt single, knotting the score at 2-2.
After Irvine took the lead back with a single run in the top of the third, the Huskies took advantage of a pair of errors by third baseman Guthrie to score four unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. done reached on an error by Guthrie, and after two singles loaded the bases, Mike Wagner (Woodinville) grounded a chopper to Guthrie, who couldn't field it cleanly, allowing a run to score.
Sophomore DH John Otness (Tacoma/Wilson) doubled down the third-base line to send home two more and a fourth run scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River), giving the UW a 6-3 lead.
UCI catcher Chris Miller belted a solo homer to lead off the eighth inning, drawing the Anteaters to within two runs at 6-4. Guthried finished with three hits for Irvine. Washington was led by three hits from Davidson and two each from Garthwaite, Otness and Isaacson.
Shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Issaquah), who had hit in 27 of 28 games this season entering Tuesday evening, saw his hitting streak snapped at 14 games. Reynolds was hit by a pitch in his final at bat in the ninth and slipped in the batters' box on what seemed to be a sure bunt single in the sixth.
The Huskies and Anteaters conclude the two-game series Wednesday with a 2:00 p.m. game.
