SEATTLE - UC Irvine scored six runs in the top of the first inning and then hung on to split its two-game series with the Washington baseball team with a 7-3 win Wednesday at Husky Ballpark.
The Anteaters (22-17) jumped on UW sophomore starter Jeff Petersen (Kent/Kentwood) for six runs in the first. Catcher Chris Miller got the scoring started with a three-run homer, his team-high eighth of the season. Later in the inning, Elliot Salcedo singled home one run and shortstop B.J. Eucce singled to drive in two more.
The Huskies (13-16-1) seemed ready to get back in the game in the bottom of the first as their first three batters reached base off of UCI ace Sean Tracey. After singles from Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) and Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) started the bottom of the first inning, junior Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) doubled to drive in both runners. Through 30 games, Garthwaite now has 47 RBI, one more than his total of 46 last year, which led the team.
However, Tracey (6-3) settled in, getting three straight outs after Garthwaite's double. He went on to pitch five innings, allowing only the two runs on eight hits while striking out two.
Three UW relievers -- sophomore Brian Carter (Woodinville) and freshmen Will Fenton (Kingston/North Kitsap) and Josh Conover (Kirkland/Lake Washington) -- held the Anteaters to only one run the rest of the way. The three combined to allow seven hits and one walk while striking out eight over eight and one-third innings. Fenton fanned four batters in three innings while Conover struck out three in two innings.
The Huskies added a run in the eighth when pinch hitter Steve Ramsey (Redmond/Eastlake) drove in Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) with a groundout. Catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River), left fielder Mike Wagner (Woodinville) and Reynolds had two hits apiece for the Huskies.
First baseman Matt Anderson, who singled and scored on Miller's homer in the first, had three hits on the day while Salcedo and Eucce each finished with two hits and two runs batted in. Right fielder Chris Klemm added two doubles for UCI.
The Huskies return to conference play this weekend when they play host to Washington State in a three-game series at Husky Ballpark. Friday's opener starts at 6:30 p.m. while Saturday and Sunday, game time is 1:00 p.m. All three games will air live on KKNW AM- 1150 and over the internet at www.newschannel1150.com.
