COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Washington baseball team surrendered leads of 6-0 and 9-6 and lost its seventh straight Sunday as Missouri scored two in the bottom of the ninth to win, 12-11, in a non- conference game at Taylor Stadium.
The Huskies (12-15-1) tied the game at 10-10 with a run in the eighth and then went ahead in the ninth when Brandon Jacobson (Issaquah) walked and eventually came around on Tila Reynold's double. Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) extended his hitting streak to 14 games and has hit safely in 27 of 28 games this year.
In the bottom of the ninth, however, Reynolds and center fielder Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) committed errors to put runners at first and second. After UW closer Tyler Shepple (Arvada, Colo.) had gotten a popout and a strikeout, DH Cody Ehlers doubled to left-center to drive in the tying run. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Jody Roughton singled to send in the winning run.
The game got off to a rough start for the Tigers. After hitting UW leadoff man Reynolds with the first pitch of the game, MU starter Abel Newton gave up a single to Husky third baseman Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.). When the throw back to the infield got away from the Tiger fielders, Newton slid in the dirt in front of the dugout to keep the ball in play, injuring his leg badly enough that he had to leave the game after facing only two batters.
After getting a popout, reliever Drew Endicott walked Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) before Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) singled to center field to drive home two runs. Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) followed with a double off the diving first baseman's glove to send home a third run and Davidson scored on a groundout by Steve Ramsey (Redmond/Eastlake) to end the top of the first with a 4-0 lead.
The Huskies made it 6-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth as Reynolds drove in one run with a single and Larsen doubled to drive in Reynolds. The Tigers, however, got into the game with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
In that five-run fourth, the Tigers took advantage of a hit batter and two walks. A wild pitch allowed Lee Laskowski to score MU's first run and a single from Jayce Tingler drove in two more. After a sacrifice bunt, a groundout from Cody Ehlers drove in a fourth run and Tingler scored from third on a second wild pitch, cutting the UW lead to 6-5.
Missouri completed the comeback by tying the game at 6-6 in the sixth when Tingler led off with a double to right, moved to third on a groundout and scored on another groundout from Ehlers. Washington went back ahead with three in the seventh on an RBI single by Davidson and a two-run double from pinch hitter John Otness (Tacoma/Wilson).
The Tigers, however, responded quickly by scoring four in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Tingler was hit by a pitch to drive in one run. After UW reliever Zack Daniels (Fircrest/Charles Wright) came on to face pinch hitter Bo Davis, a balk was called, allowing another run to score. Davis followed with a two-run single to give Missouri its first lead of the day at 10-9.
The Huskies tied the game at 10-10 in an unusual fashion. Garthwaite, who had singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. MU reliever Matt Hobbs struck out Davidson for the third out, but the pitch was dropped and catcher Brent Lacy's throw to first to attempt to get the out hit Davidson in the back, allowing Garthwaite to score.
The Huskies return to Seattle for their next nine games. Tuesday and Wednesday, the UW plays host to UC Irvine before Washington State comes to Husky Ballpark for a three- game series Friday through Sunday. Tuesday's UC Irvine game and all three vs. WSU will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
