UW Takes Series With 4-3 Win Over No. 2 Stanford

SEATTLE - Freshman Kyle Larsen singled home Greg Isaacson with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th as the Washington baseball team beat No. 2 Stanford, 4-3, Sunday at Husky Ballpark. The Huskies won the three-game Pac-10 series, two games to one, breaking the Cardinal's streak of 12 consecutive series victories.
Stanford, ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 all season, hadn't lost a weekend series since California took two of three in a series last season. The Cardinal (27-10 overall, 5-4 in the Pac-10) had won 29 of its last 31 weekend series. Washington (17-19-1 overall, 5-4 Pac- 10) had never beaten Stanford in a regular-season series, though the Huskies did win the Pac-10 Championship Series over the Cardinal in both 1997 and 1998.
Husky senior ace Shawn Kohn (Woodinville), who beat Stanford with a 103-pitch complete game on Friday, threw the final two innings Sunday to get the win, improving to 8-2 on the season. Kohn allowed two singles and struck out one over the two innings in relief of starter Clay Johnson (Elma). Johnson had perhaps his best outing of the season, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over eight innings.
In the 10th, with reliever Ryan McCally (3-2) on the hill for Stanford, Isaacson, a sophomore from Aberdeen, singled through the right side of the infield. After Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview) moved Isaacson to second with a sacrifice bunt, shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) singled to put runners at first and third. Larsen, the UW first baseman from Redmond's Eastlake High, laced a hard grounder that was knocked down by Stanford second baseman Chris O'Riordan, but there was no chance to get the runner at home with one out, so it went for a single for Larsen. McCally also took the loss in relief on Friday.
Larsen hit one of two UW solo homers earlier in the game, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the fourth with his team's first hit of the ballgame off of Stanford starter John Hudgins. After Cardinal catcher Ryan Garko tied the game with a solo homer in the seventh, the Cardinal took a 3-1 lead in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from left fielder Danny Putnam and an RBI single from O'Riordan.
Washington came back to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth. Freshman catcher Aaron Hathaway led off with his second home run of the year and, later in the inning, Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) reached on a bases-loaded fielder's choice, narrowly beating out the double play try, to drive in Taylor Johnson.
Washington hadn't won a Pac-10 series against a team outside of the Northwest (Washington State and Oregon State) since opening the league season with a two-games-to- one win over USC last year.
The Huskies' next action comes this weekend as the Dawgs travel to face California in a three-game league series in Berkeley Friday through Sunday. The UW returns home to face UCLA May 3-5.
