Kohn Three-Hits Cal In 2-0 Win

BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior Shawn Kohn pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the Washington baseball team to a 2- 0 win over California Friday afternoon in the first game of a three-game Pac-10 series at Evans Diamond.
Kohn, a right-hander from Woodinville, threw his fifth complete game of the year to pick up his league-leading ninth victory, improving to 9-2 on the season. He struck out only two and walked one while allowing two singles and a bloop double.
Kohn managed to hold Cal's triple-crown threat Conor Jackson without a hit. Jackson entered the week leading the Pac-10 in batting (.401), home runs (15) and runs batted in (55), but popped to second base twice, flied to right and lined to short to end the game.
Washington (18-19-1 overall, 6-4 in the Pac-10) scored its first run in second inning when catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) reached on a bases-loaded fielder's choice, allowing Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) to score from third base.
The Huskies had seemingly scored another run in the fourth, when dcenter fielder Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) led off with a double and scored when Hathaway singled to right. However, Garthwaite failed to touch third base on his way home and the Bears appealed successfully, erasing the run from the scoreboard.
Garthwaite made up for his baserunning miscue more than once. In both the third and sixth innings, he snuffed out scoring chances for the Bears by making diving catches for the third out with a runner on second base.
Freshman first baseman Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) belted a solo homer, his fifth of the season, with two down in the ninth to add the UW's second run. The Huskies compiled 11 hits in the game, led by three from Larsen and two each from Garthwaite and Davidson, but left at least one runner on base in every inning but the first and ninth for a total of 11 for the game.
Cal freshman starter Brent Hale (2-3) allowed only one run in his three and two-thirds innings of work, but suffered the loss nonetheless. He allowed six hits and walked two. Cal, which entered the game tied with Washington and Stanford for third in the Pac-10 in terms of games behind, fell to 26-20 overall, 8-8 in the conference.
The Huskies and Bears continue the three-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
