SEATTLE - The No. 2-ranked Stanford baseball team overcame a 4-2 deficit and then broke it open late to beat Washington, 9-4, Saturday at Husky Ballpark, squaring the three- game Pac-10 series at one win apiece.
The Cardinal (27-9 overall, 5-3 in the Pac-10) scored two in the seventh to tie it at 4-4, then got a run in the eighth to take the lead for the first time. Four runs in the ninth put the win away. Senior reliever Dan Rich (1-0) struck out a career-high six batters to pick up the victory. He threw four and two-thirds shutout innings, allowing only three hits and no walks.
Washington (16-19-1 overall, 4-4 Pac-10) got four runs batted in from freshman catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) to build a 4-2 lead. Hathaway drove in a run with a single in the second, two more with a double in the third and a fourth with a single in the fifth inning. He finished the day 3-for-4.
Stanford got to UW freshmen relievers David Dowling (Kirkland/Juanita) and Will Fenton (Kingston/North Kitsap) in the seventh and eighth. After an RBI triple from Danny Putnam brough the Cardinal within a run at 4-3, Chris O'Riordan grounded out to score Putnam with the tying run in the seventh. In the eighth, a single from third baseman Arik VanZandt, a senior from Bellevue's Interlake High, drove in Brian Hall with the go-ahead run.
An two-run triple from Hall and a pair of sacrifice flies in the ninth led to four Stanford runs and put the game away.
UW starter Sean White (Mercer Island) was strong in his six-inning outing, but didn't get the decision despite leaving the game with the 4-2 lead. The junior allowed two runs on seven hits.
Catcher Ryan Garko and designated hitter Jason Cooper each had three hits for the Cardinal, with Cooper contributing two doubles.
The Huskies and Stanford close out the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as the UW completes a nine-game homestand.
