SEATTLE - Senior ace Shawn Kohn held No. 2 Stanford to a run on six hits to lead the Washington baseball team to a 3-1 upset win over the Cardinal Friday night at Husky Ballpark in the first game of a three-game Pac-10 series.
Kohn, a righty from Woodinville, improved his record to 7-2 with his fourth complete- game effort of the season. He didn't walk a batter and fanned only two while giving up five singles and a double. Washington, 16-18-1 overall and 4-3 in Pac-10 play, caught the Cardinal for third place in the Pac-10. The Cardinal fell to 26-9 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
After Kohn had retired the first nine Stanford batters in order, Cardinal second baseman Chris O'Riordan led off the fourth with a double down the left-field line. After a bunt single from Sam Fuld put runners at the corners, catcher Ryan Garko grounded into a double play, sending home O'Riordan with the game's first run.
After getting a runner to second base in the first inning, the Huskies didn't manage to get a runner past first until Stanford starter Jeremy Guthrie was relieved to start the bottom of the seventh. Reliever Ryan McCally walked Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) and Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) to put runners at first and second with no outs.
Freshman catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) singled through the right side to plate Johnson with the tying run before second baseman Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen) singled up the middle, scoring Done to put the Huskies in front, 2-1.
The Huskies scored their third run on an unusual play in the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) grounded to first. The first baseman threw home to get the lead runner and catcher Ryan Garko's throw to first for the double- play try hit Garthwaite in the helmet, allowing Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) to score from second. However, Bryan Johnson, trying to score from first, was thrown out at the plate for the third out.
McCally, the Cardinal's top reliever, suffered his first loss of the year to fall to 3-1 as the Huskies broke an eight-game losing streak to Stanford, dating back to 1999. Guthrie allowed only two hits and no runs over six innings, but didn't get a decision. He struck out seven and walked only one.
The Huskies and Cardinal go at it again Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Sunday's series finale is also set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
