SEATTLE - Former Arizona State pitcher Andy Torres improved his record to 6-0 on the season in leading Lewis-Clark State, the NAIA's No 7-ranked baseball team, to a 6-5 win over Washington Tuesday night in a non-conference game at Husky Ballpark.
Torres, who was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 pick last year at ASU, threw eight innings for the victory as the Warriors improved to 25-10 on the year. Torres allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out seven. Washington fell to 15-18-1 for the season.
The Warriors threatened to score in the first inning when Micah Furtado singled and Mark Gallagher doubled to open the game, but they were stranded at second and third base when UW starter Brian Carter (Woodinville) got a popout, a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning.
In the third, L-C State scored one run to go in front. Mike Morgan reached when shortstop Tila Reynold's throw pulled first baseman Kyle Larsen off the bag. After a bunt and a flyout moved Morgan to third, he scored on a single up the middle by catcher Gabe Stajduhar.
The Warriors, however, opened up the offense in the fourth inning off of UW reliever Scott Robertson (Mercer Island), scoring five runs. The first six LC hitters of the inning reached base, including David Bernstine, whose sixth homer of the year came with a man on first. Run-scoring singles from Morgan and Furtado and a sacrifice fly from Gallagher accounted for the other three runs.
The Huskies scored three in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap. Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single from Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.). After catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) walked, sophomore Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen) singled to drive in Done and put runners at first and third. Isaacson and Hathaway then pulled off a double steal, with Hathaway scoring to cut the Lewis-Clark State lead to 6-3.
In the fifth, UW left fielder Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) tripled to drive in Johnson, making it 6-4. The Huskies rallied in the ninth as Torres hit Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) with a pitch to open the inning. LC reliever Kevin Welch then gave up a double to UW freshman Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview) with Reynolds scoring, but stranded Johnson on base to earn his first save.
Carter, a sophomore righty making his first start of the season, was stuck with the loss despite allowing one unearned run over three innings. Senior Zack Daniels (Fircrest/Charles Wright) threw two scoreless innings and freshman Will Fenton (Kingston/North Kitsap) pitched the final three frames, allowing one hit and no runs while fanning five, as the Husky coaches tried to spread the work around with a conference weekend coming up.
The Huskies close out their nine-game homestand this weekend as No. 2 Stanford comes to town for a three-game league series Friday through Sunday.
