Kohn Improves To 6-0 With Win Over WSU

LEWISTON, Idaho - Washington senior ace Shawn Kohn picked up his sixth victory in as many starts as the Huskies beat Washington State, 7-3, Monday in a non-conference game at Harris Field. The game was moved to Lewis-Clark State's home field due to poor weather in Pullman.
Kohn, a right-hander from Woodinville, improved to 6-0 on the year with a six- inning outing. He allowed only two hits and two runs (one earned) while retiring the last 10 batters he faced before being relieved. Reliever Trevor Gibson (Enumclaw) pitched three scoreless innings for his first save, combining with Kohn on a four-hitter. WSU's Marshall Hendon (0-1) threw two and two-thirds to suffered the loss.
Both teams loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning, but only WSU (10- 13) was able to get anything out of it. Cougar starter Nick Kenyon got two strikeouts and a lineout to work out of the jam while after striking out one batter, Kohn allowed a sacrifice fly as the Cougs took a 1-0 lead.
That lead held until the third when UW shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) led off with a double. After a walk to Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale), first baseman Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) belted a double to score Reynolds. Davidson gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead when he scored on a groundout by DH Bryan Johnson (Ephrata).
In the bottom of the third, the Cougars scored when Kohn walked Jon Baeder with the bases loaded. Kohn had walked only three batters in 38 innings all year, but walked two in the third alone and three in the game. In the fourth, the UW went back in front when Reynolds doubled for the second time in the game, driving home second baseman Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen) to put the UW in front, 3-2.
The Huskies (10-8-1) added single tallies in the sixth and seventh. In the sixth, Brandon Jacobson (Issaquah) walked and eventually scored on a Davidson groundout. In the seventh, center fielder Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) belted a solo homer to center, his sixth of the year and his seventh in 10 career games against the UW's cross-state rival.
After an RBI double from Evan Hecker posted a run for WSU in the seventh, Larsen put the Huskies back up by three runs with an eighth-inning solo homer. Garthwaite made it 7-3 when his double scored Bryan Johnson from first base. Larsen finished 2-for-5 with a double, a homer and two RBI. Reynolds went 3-for- 5 with two doubles and Garthwaite was 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and two walks.
The Huskies and Cougars conclude the two-game set Tuesday in a 2:00 p.m. game at Harris Field.
