SEATTLE - Shawn Kohn tied a career high with 11 strikeouts to lead the Washington baseball team to an 11-2 win over Utah Friday in the Huskies' home opener at Husky Ballpark.
Kohn, a senior from Woodinville, allowed one run over seven innings to improve to 3-0 on the year. He walked only one and surrendered five hits. Last season, Kohn struck out 11 on two occassions, against Portland and Oregon State. Washington upped its record to 6-3 with the victory while Utah fell to 8-8.
Junior Brandon Jacobson (Issaquah) got the Huskies on the board in the second inning, when his two-out single drove in a pair of runs. Washington posted two more in the third when DH Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) belted a two-run homer, his fourth of the season.
In the fourth, the Huskies made it 6-0, scoring two more runs without the benefit of a hit. Catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) was hit by a pitch and eventually scored thanks to a pair of Ute errors. Jacobson reached on one of those two errors, stole second and third and score on a sacrifice fly from right fielder Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale).
The Huskies broke the game open in the sixth, scoring four runs on two-run singles from Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) and Hathaway.
Utah avoided the shutout in the seventh when center fielder Matt Ciaramella connected for a two-out solo home run, his second of the year. The Utes added another in the eighth on an RBI single from Nate Weese.
Utah starter Jason Wylie fell to 3-2 with the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits over four innings. He walked three and struck out six.
The Huskies and Utes continue the three-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
