Utah Rolls To 17-8 Win Over Huskies

SEATTLE - After allowing a three-run homer in the first inning, Utah starter Cheyenne Rushton settled in and led the Utes to a 17-8 win over the Washington baseball team Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
The Utes got five hits, including a home run, from first baseman Nate Weese while second baseman Adam Castleton went 4-for-5 with three runs batted in and Matt Ciaramella waent 2-for-5 with four RBI.
Utah (9-8) scored two runs in the first off of Husky sophomore starter Clay Johnson (Elma), who worked only one and one-third innings in the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. In the bottom of the first, Rushton walked Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview) and then gave up a single to shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty). Senior Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) followed with a three-run homer to give the Huskies (6-4) a lead, but Rushton didn't allow another run until the seventh.
In the meantime, the Utah bats were busy. The Utes scored six in the second inning and Weese belted a two-run homer in the third to make it 10-3. If the result was in any doubt, it was erased in the seventh when Mike Westfall's solo homer and a two-run single from Donnie Saba led to four runs to put Utah in front, 14-4.
Washington got back-to-back solo homers from sophomore Steve Ramseyand freshman Kyle Larsen, both from Redmond's Eastlake High, in the eighth, but it was too little, too late.
Rushton worked six and two-thirds in the victory to improve to 2-1. He allowed four runs off of seven hits while striking out five. UW freshman Will Fenton (Kingston/North Kitsap) threw five innings of relief for the Huskies.
The Utes and Huskies will decide the series Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. game.
