PHOENIX, Ariz. - An eighth-inning grand slam from freshman Nick Batkoski (Federal Way) highlighted the Washington baseball team's 9-4 win over the University of British Columbia Saturday in a non-counting exhibition game at the Rawlings Spring Training Tournament at Papago Park.
Neither the win nor the individual statistics in the game counted as the UBC team is from outside of the United States.
Washington used six different pitchers in the game, including three freshmen. Freshman lefty David Dowling (Kirkland/Juanita) started and threw two innings to get the victory. He allowed only one baserunner, who reached on an error, but faced the minimum six hitters after picking the runner off.
Freshmen Will Fenton (Kingston/North Kitsap) and Jamie Hawkins (Bainbridge) worked two innings each while junior Brian Barton (Richland), senior Zack Daniels (Fircrest/Charles Wright) and senior Greg Colburn (Billings, Mont./Skyview) each threw one inning.
Batkoski's grand slam was part of a six-run eighth. Junior Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent- Meridian) led off that inning with a home run and also drove in a run in his second at bat of the frame.
Batkoski, Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) and Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) each had two hits to lead the UW attack while Garthwaite went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
UBC starter Jeff Brewer threw five innings in the loss. Shortstop Adam Campbell was the only Thunderbird to record more than one hit, with a single and a double.
The Huskies finish up their first weekend of the 2002 season Sunday when they face Missouri at 12:30 p.m. at Municipal Stadium.
