PHOENIX, Ariz. - Missouri scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Washington baseball team, 10-9, Sunday at the Rawlings Spring Training Tournament at Municipal Stadium.
Missouri (3-1) loaded the bases on three singles before a walk to Chris Julo sent in one run. A single to right field from catcher Brian Desch sent home a second run and UW reliever Scott Robertson (Mercer Island) hit Luke Cassis with a pitch to send home the tying run.
With the bases loaded and none out, UW reliever Trevor Gibson (Enumclaw) came in to face Jayce Tingler. Tingler lined a single through the left side of the drawn-in infield to send home Julo with the winning run.
Robertson (0-1) suffered the loss for the Huskies while MU freshman Abel Newton (1-0) took the win. Washington suffered its first loss of 2002, falling to 3-1 on the year.
The Huskies struck first in the first inning when Michael Done, a second baseman from Littleton, Colo., belted a solo homer. Missouri answered in the second when DH Cody Ehlers led off with a home run, also his second.
In the fourth, left fielder Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) broke out of an early season slump with a bases-loaded single up the middle. Two runs scored to give Washington a 3-1 edge. The UW added three more in the fifth on a two-run homer from shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) and another solo shot from Done.
Sophomore Steve Ramsey (Redmond/Eastlake) hit his first career home run during a two-run sixth inning, a solo blast to right. The Huskies added another in the seventh when Ramsey singled to drive in a run.
Done finished 3-for-5 on the day while Hathaway and Ramsey each had two hits.
Ehlers finished the day 3-for-5 with a home run and a double for Missouri. Third baseman Jody Roughton added a two-run homer and Mick Weiss went 4-for-5 with two singles, a double and a triple.
The Huskies return to the road next weekend when they travel to face Fresno State in a three-game series Friday through Sunday.
