PHOENIX, Ariz. - Three Husky pitchers combined to two-hit Northwestern and Bryan Johnson's second- inning solo homer held up as the winning run as the Washington baseball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 2-0 win over Northwestern at the Rawlings Spring Training Tournament at Papago Park.
Husky starter Sean White (Mercer Island) no-hit the Wildcats through the first four and one-third innings before NU third baseman Frank Favia reached on a ground-ball single through the right side of the infield. White, a junior righty, was on a low pitch count after a shoulder injury last season and left the game after the fifth inning. He allowed only the one hit while walking two and striking out two and allowed only three fly balls.
Sophomore Brian Carter (Woodinville) relieved White to start the sixth inning and threw three no-hit innings, walking none and striking out two. Junior closer Tyler Shepple (Arvada, Colo.) finished up, throwing the ninth for his second save in as many games. In the ninth, NU first baseman managed a bloop single to right, but the Huskies turned a double-play on the next play to end the game.
Washington's first run came in the second inning when Johnson (Ephrata), a junior first baseman, belted a leadoff homer off of NU starter Ryan Bos (0-1). Bos worked eight strong innings in the loss, allowing six hits and one walk. Northwestern fell to 0-3.
The Huskies added insurance in the ninth. Johnson singled to lead off and was replaced by pinch runner Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview), who stole second and then scored on a double from third baseman John Otness (Tacoma/Wilson).
Junior center fielder Brandon Jacobson (Issaquah), whose diving, over-the-shoulder catch on the game's first play set the tone, went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) went 2-for-4 with a double.
Later today, the Huskies face the University of British Columbia in a seven-inning exhibition game, beginning at 2:00 p.m. (MST). The UW's season-opening trip concludes Sunday when the Huskies face Missouri at 12:30 p.m. (MST).
