SEATTLE - Washington freshman Amanda Oleson's (Agoura Hills, Calif.) two-out RBI single in the bottom of the third, driving in senior Kelly Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.), proved to be the game-winner as the 14th-ranked Huskies upset second-ranked Arizona, 1-0, Friday at the Husky Softball Stadium. With the win, the UW moved to 25-12 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-10, while the Wildcats fell to 38-3 and 2-1 in conference play.
The Huskies got the game's only run in the third, when Hauxhurst singled through the left side of the infield with two outs and moved to second following a walk by senior Kim DePaul (Tomball, Texas). Oleson then drove a 2-0 pitch through the right side of the infield, just beyond the reach of Arizona first baseman Jennie Finch, to score Hauxhurst all the way from second.
The Wildcats, who lead the nation with a .381 team batting average, had a number of good opportunities to score with the first coming in top of third with the bases-loaded and one out. UW pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.), however, stuck out Arizona leftfielder Nicole Giordano swinging and third baseman Toni Mascarenas looking to end the threat.
In Arizona's final at-bat in the top of the seventh, shortstop Allison Andrade singled with one out and moved to second on a ground-out by second baseman Lisha Ribellia. Senior Lauren Bauer then reached base on a UW fielding error and later stole second to put runners at second and third with two outs. After Giordano walked to load the bases, Bollinger got Mascarenas to hit a harp chopper back at her, which she tossed to catcher Amy Hanson (Mt. Vernon, Wash.) for the force-out at home plate.
Bollinger moved to 23-2 with the win, allowing just four hits, striking out seven and shutting out the Wildcats for the first time this season. Arizona pitcher Becky Lemke took the loss to fall to 13-2 on the season.
The Huskies play host to two more Pac-10 Conference games this weekend as the ninth-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils travel to Seattle for a single game on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.). The games will be broadcast live on KSRB-1150 AM.
