SAN DIEGO (AP) - Curtis Allen scored a career-high 25 points and C.J. Massingale hit four free throws in the final 12 seconds as Washington held on for a 98-94 win over San Diego on Saturday.
The Huskies (5-1) held a huge advantage at the free throw line, sinking 37 of 43 (86 percent) overall and 27 of 31 in the second half.
San Diego (2-3) continued its horrid free throw shooting this season, making just 20 of 34, including 5 of 16 in the second half.
Washington is off to its best start since the 1997-98 team began 6-1 en route to advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16.
The Huskies blew most of the 14-point lead they held with 1:37 left. San Diego, down 94-85 with 34.5 seconds remaining, got two baskets by Andre Laws and a three-point play by Corey Belser to pull to within 94-92 with 12 seconds left.
But Massingale sank four free throws, including a pair with 5.7 seconds left for the final margin. Those came after a Laws basket cut the lead to 96-94 with 6.9 seconds to play. Massingale was 9-for-9 from the line and finished with 19 points off the bench.
Allen hit 4-of-6 3-pointers and made all seven of his free throws.
Laws scored a career-high 36 points but was just 6-of-13 from the line.
