ST. GEORGE, Utah - Junior Kim DePaul and redshirt freshman Jenny Topping both recorded grand slams against Utah in a game in which the No. 1 Huskies also broke the home run record with five long balls to upend the Utes, 14-1, in the Red Desert Classic on Saturday. Washington defeated Southern Utah, 8-1, earlier in the day with a record-tying six doubles to improve to 17-1 and will face Tulsa tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the final game of the tournament.

Topping's slam was her second in as many days, and she added another four-bagger against USU, while freshman Jaime Clark belted two homers against Utah to give both eight on the season. With DePaul's homer against the Thunderbirds and senior Melissa Downs' vs. the Utes, the Huskies added seven to their season total, which now stands at 28. That is just 11 off the UW season record and two more than the team hit all of last season. Eight different Huskies have knocked at least one ball over the fence this year.

In the first outing, senior Jamie Graves struck out five in four innings to improve to 10-0 on the season before sophomore Bridget Wilcox relieved her in the fifth. Senior Rosie Leutzinger led off with a single and stole second before DePaul's shot over the left field fence made it 2-0. Topping's solo shot came in the third inning.

UW put two more on the board in the fourth. Leutzinger doubled and DePaul walked before Topping's long double to the center field fence gave both baserunners time to score. Southern Utah scored one in the fifth before UW put three more across in the bottom of the frame. Graves singled to lead off and moved to second during senior Jeanine Giordano's at-bat. Leutzinger walked before junior Kelly Hauxhurst's double sent Graves home. That hit by Hauxhurst kept her hitting streak alive, which now ties the school record at 15. DePaul then belted a two-RBI double for the final 8-1 count.

The Dawg offense started quietly against Utah, with two runs in the first three innings, before taking off in the last three frames. The first of Clark's two homers came in the second for UW's first score, and junior Christie Rosenblad scored in the third inning by getting hit by a pitch, moving to second on Hauxhurst's single and coming home on a Topping single.

DePaul's grand slam came in the fourth inning to put UW up, 6-0. Sophomore Shannon Walsh reached first on an error, and Rosenblad singled before Rosenblad and pinch runner Erin Helgeland performed a double steal. Hauxhurst walked to set the table for DePaul's second slam of the year. Clark then put a ball over the center field fence in the fifth before the Husky offense exploded in the sixth inning for seven runs.

Rosenblad doubled, and Leutzinger and Hauxhurst singled to bring Rosenblad home. DePaul walked to load the bases for Topping's blast beyond the center field fence. Freshman Lauren McJunkin then walked to give Downs a two-RBI homer. Senior Jennifer Spediacci (7-1) struck out six batters in five innings before Walsh relieved her in the sixth inning, when the Utes scored an unearned run.
