SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team, behind a strong starting performance from junior lefty Matt Gardner, jumped on San Francisco early and beat the Dons, 10-5, in a non-conference game Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.
Gardner, who underwent off-season shoulder surgery, allowed only one run on seven hits over six innings of work, making use of three UW double plays. He improved to 2-3 with the victory as Washington broke a three-game losing streak and improved to 15-20. USF fell to 24-17 with the loss.
UW stole four bases and took advantage of two USF errors in the four-run second inning. Freshman Tyler Davidson had the big hit in the inning when he doubled home a pair of runs to break a 1-1 tie. Davidson eventually scored on a Justin Drake safety squeeze bunt.
USF starter John Herbert (3-3) walked the first two Huskies to lead off the third inning before being relieved by Greg Moore. Michael Done followed with an RBI single and catcher Jefferson Thiel plated two more runs with a double to make it 7-1.
Washington got solo home runs from Todd Linden in the fifth and Marc Rittenhouse in the sixth. Rittenhouse, who had five homers over his first two seasons, now leads the team with nine this season. Done extended his hitting streak to 14 games by going 2-for-5.
The Dons closed the gap with four runs in the eighth off of freshman reliever Tyler Shepple. All-American Tag Bozied drove in two with a bases-loaded single for the third and fourth runs of the inning, but Shepple struck out Danny Trumble to end the threat.
The Huskies and Dons close out the two-game series Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
