CAPITOLA, Calif. - Washington's 31st-ranked men's tennis squad defeated Sacramento State 6-1 Monday, its first of three matches this week in Northern California. With the win, Washington improved to 8-5 on the 2000 season, with matches in Capitola against Brigham Young on Friday, and Clemson Saturday before returning home to face in-state rival Gonzaga on Mar. 31.
Freshman Matt Hanlin, ranked among the nation's top-100 collegiate players, defeated Fabio Jesus of Sacramento State 6-2, 6-0 to open the scoring for Washington. Fellow frosh Ari Strasberg, juniors Jeremy Berman and Marius Lunde, and senior Mark Woolley each followed suit, capturing their matches in straight sets. Junior Andy Posovac was the only Husky to suffer a loss in singles, falling in three sets to Sacramento State's Chris Smith.
Posovac redeemed himself in doubles, however, teaming with Nick Quatrochi to defeat Kevin Vieira and Fabio Jesus 9-7, while teammates Berman and Strasberg took care of Jordan Boyles and Silvan Iff, 9-7.
