PALO ALTO, Calif. - Junior midfielder Theresa Wagner scored one goal and assisted another for the Washington women's soccer team which tied 12th-ranked Stanford 2-2 despite being outshot 25-4 late Friday night at Maloney Field.
Washington (8-7-2) remained undefeated in its last six games, posting a 4-0-2 record during that span. The third-place Huskies moved to 5-1-2 in Pacific-10 Conference play. The Cardinal (13-4-1) is 6-1-1 in conference action.
Marcia Wallis scored two goals for Stanford, including a header with 24 seconds remaining in regulation. That goal forced a 30-minue overtime session that did not produce a goal and the game was declared a tie.
The result marked the second time this season a ranked opponent spoiled a Washington upset bid with a last-minute goal. The Huskies tied then-12th ranked UCLA 3-3 after the Bruins scored with 25 seconds left in regulation on Oct. 17 in Los Angeles.
Freshman goalkeeper Hope Solo registered eight saves for the Huskies. Stanford's Carly Smolak had one save.
Wallis opened he scoring three minutes into the game. Washington senior Jana Wilson tied the scored at 23:44 off an assist from Wagner, a product of Seattle's Lakeside High School. Wagner tallied a goal of her own 31 seconds later, at 24:15.
Washington concludes its regular-season schedule on Sunday at California. The NCAA Tournament bracket will be announced Sunday evening.
