UW Falls To Defending Champ Indiana, 2-0, In NCAA Second Round
November 28, 1999 | Men's Soccer
The Hoosiers scored early in both halves to take command of the match. The first goal came at 6:14, when Aleksey Korol put a diving header from 10 yards out into the left side of the goal off a pass from Yuri Laurinenko. Indiana scored off the second-half kickoff at 45:15, when Tyler Hawley sent a pass to Ryan Mack, who punched it in from 18 yards out.
Though UW had an 8-7 shot advantage, Indiana led in dangerous attempts and had an 8-2 corner-kick edge.
"The best team today won the match," UW coach Dean Wurzberger said. "Today we saw a defending champion who knew how to win matches. They were more savvy in restarts, they were shrewd, and they had a higher quality in service and runs.
"They are an experienced team, we have four sophomores and a freshman in the starting lineup. We looked like we lacked confidence. We showed a little timidity or stage fright. We're had a great run, but today we met a defending champ at home and they looked like it."
"We wanted to make them play our game, but they made us change to their formation," UW sophomore midfielder Benjamin Somoza said. "Their defense is extremely tough and did a great job today."
Indiana coach Jerry Yeagley knew what his team had to do to win.
"Washington was a difficult team and we knew they would be," Yeagley said. "Fortunately, we were able to shut down two areas we needed to--their attack through the midfield and slowing down their restarts. We won the game with good defending and two good restarts. But UW is dangerous in the things they do, and I wasn't really comfortable until the closing minutes.
