SEATTLE - Portland Pilot goalkeeper Curtis Spiteri should have hugged the far post. Two Washington shots ricocheted off the far post in the final 22 minutes of the match to help preserve Portland's 2-1 win over the Huskies at Husky Soccer Field. UW falls to 5-4-2, while Portland improves to 8-1-1.
The Pilots struck very quickly, scoring a goal off the opening kickoff 10 seconds into the match. Brian Winters booted a through ball to Jeff Alexander, who pushed it into the net. But the Huskies answered less than nine minutes later, when sophomore Greg Foisie scored at close range off a short cross by sophomore Benjamin Somoza at 8:31.
The scoring slowed considerably thereafter, with Portland's game-winner coming at 73:13. Matthew Domingo fed Conor Casey, who chipped the ball over UW keeper Chad Olsen. The Huskies had three excellent shots on goal, two of which bounced off the far post, but could not find the back of the net.
"We did everything we could," UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "We had two or three clear-cut chances, but we need to combine quality defense with on-target finishing. It's disheartening, because we completely dominated territorially. We need to turn our focus to the MPSF season and put all our effort into getting to the postseason."
Washington outshot the Pilots, 13-5, and had a 6-4 corner-kick advantage.
