SEATTLE - The field for the six regions of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship were announced on Monday and Washington will be the No. 6 seed in the Tucson Region. The University of Arizona will host the tournament, May 19-21, at Omni Tucson National Golf Course.
The Huskies are making their ninth NCAA Regional appearance in 10 seasons under the guidance of head coach Matt Thurmond. Washington has advanced to the NCAA Championships from all nine of those regional appearances, recording a team-best third-place finish in 2005.
"We're excited," said Thurmond. "The team doesn't know the course well, but I've been there many times and had success there in the past. We don't have to travel too far and we get a course we're familiar with."
The first stop of college golf's postseason, the NCAA Regional is a 54-hole event, which will be contested at Tucson National, a par 72, 7,094-yard layout. Eighteen holes of stroke play will be played each day.
Tucson National has hosted more than 30 PGA Tour events and was the longtime home of the Tucson Open and Chrysler Classic of Tucson.
In all, 14 teams will compete at the Tucson Regional The top five finishing teams and one individual will advance to the 114th NCAA Championships, May 31-June 5, at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
Washington won the 2010 NCAA West Regional at Bremerton's Gold Mountain Golf Course, with Husky Richard Lee taking home medalist honors.
The Huskies went on to finish fourth in the stroke play portion of the 2011 NCAA Championship at the Honors Course outside of Chattanooga, Tenn. and were eliminated in the first round of match play.
