UW Men's Golf Seeded Sixth For NCAA Regional In Tucson
WALNUT CREEK, Calf. - The Pac-10 announced its post-season awards for the 2011 golf season and Washington's Chris Williams was named first team all-conference, while Charlie Hughes received second team honors.
Williams, who was the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and second team all conference in 2010, had another great season for the Huskies. The sophomore from Moscow, Idaho has finished first or second among Huskies in 11 of 12 team events this year and has one win under his belt. He has seven top-10 finishes this year and a team-leading strokes per round average of 71.20. Williams' season scoring average ranks as the fifth best in UW team history.
Hughes, a sophomore from Maple Ridge, B.C., came into his own this season. He was second behind Williams with a 72.19 strokes per round average and had top-10 finishes in five events. Hughes also earned his first career victory by an impressive six-stroke margin at the Bandon Dunes Invitational in March. He is also a standout in the classroom and learned he was accepted into the ultra-competitive UW Business School this past week.
"Those guys had a great year and they deserve to be recognized as such," said UW coach Matt Thurmond of his sophomore sensations. "I am proud of them and they have some great things ahead."
Patrick Cantlay of UCLA was named the Pac-10 Men's Golfer of the Year and the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, while Bruins' coach Derek Freeman was tabbed Pac-10 Coach of the Year in a voting by the Pac-10 men's golf coaches.
