Parks Named Gohuskies.com Student-Athlete Of The Week

May 9, 2011
SEATTLE – Husky junior golfer Sadena Parks has been named the Gohuskes.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 2-8. This is the second such honor for the women’s golf team this season. Karinn Dickinson was awarded on Sept. 27.
Parks and the Huskies finished seventh at the NCAA West Regional securing a spot in the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2006. The NCAA Championships begin May 18 at the Texas A&M Legends Course in College Station, Texas.
The Tacoma, Wash., native struggled on day one, shooting an 81 which was fourth-best on the team as the Huskies were 10th after the first round.
Day two however was a completely different story for Parks. She shot a course record at Washington National in Auburn with a 66 and moved up from 94th to a tie for 13th and the top Husky in the tournament.
She shot a 6-under 66 to top the previous women's record of 67 set in 2002 during the NCAA Championship by Washington's Louise Friberg and Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum.
Parks, who began the round on the 10th tee, caught fire on the second nine after making the turn on No. 18 at 1-under. She would start a birdie streak on No. 3 that spanned four holes and then add a final birdie on No. 8. Parks struggled with an 81 on Thursday and had a simple explanation as to why she was able to shoot the lights out on Friday.
Not only was Parks' 66 the course record for a woman, but it was the best score of her life. She had previously shot a 67 several years ago during a fundraiser while playing in Portland. But she never had a round like Friday, on a big stage like a NCAA Regional.
Washington combined for a 294 (+6) and was able to move from a tie for 10th in the team standings up to sixth.
In the final round on Saturday, Parks shot a 77 and led the Huskies with a total score of 224, well enough for a tie for 22nd. UW was seventh overall as a team at 905 (+41).
Other nominees include: Ryan Wiggins (baseball), men’s crew varsity 8, women’s crew varsity 8, Jeremy Taiwo (men’s track and field), Shawna Wright (softball) and Taylor Nichols (women’s track and field).
