SEATTLE -- The Husky volleyball team makes its first trip to South Dakota this week looking to wrap up an undefeated non-conference season. The final challenge before Big Ten play will be both South Dakota State and South Dakota, and the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Washington (7-0) first takes on the SDSU Jackrabbits on Friday at 2 p.m. Pacific time, then on Saturday the Huskies face the Coyotes of USD at 10 a.m. Pacific. Both matches will be streamed live on the Summit League Network, available for a subscription fee via MidcoSportsPlus.com
Washington has never faced either South Dakota State or South Dakota, both out of the Summit League. SDSU was the 2025 league champions and voted the preseason favorite to repeat, while South Dakota was pegged as the preseason No. 2 team. SDSU is 4-5 thus far but has faced No. 1 Nebraska and No. 22 Kansas, and had five-set losses to "receiving votes" Tulsa and Villanova. South Dakota is 7-2 with wins over Northern Iowa and UC Santa Barbara.
The Huskies are coming off an Apple Cup win over Washington State on Sunday for their seventh-straight win to start the season. The last time UW went undefeated through non-conference was just two years ago in 2024, the last time the Huskies made the NCAA tournament. Washington's .289 attack percentage agains the Cougs was its second-highest of the season, raising the Dawgs to a .263 mark for the year. In the past six matches, excluding the season opener, UW has been very consistent on offense, hitting between .248 and .298. The Dawgs continue to play strong defense, holding opponents to .142 for the year, ranking third in the Big Ten.
South Dakota State outside hitter Sylvie Zgonc earned the first two Summit League Offensive Player of the Week awards, while South Dakota setter Ella Rogers earned the same award in the third week of the season. Zgonc is averaging an impressive 4.85 kills per set, hitting .345 for the Jackrabbits. Rogers had 97 assists in the past three matches for the Coyotes.
