SEATTLE -- It's right back to work on the road for the Huskies, with challenging road matches at Ohio State and Penn State in the third week of Big Ten play. Washington (12-1, 3-1 Big Ten) is up to No. 20 in the rankings after its biggest win of the season on Sunday, but UW will be looking for its first ever wins in Columbus and Happy Valley. The Huskies and the Buckeyes (9-5, 2-2 Big Ten) meet on Friday at 4 p.m. Pacific time at the Covelli Center. Sunday, the Dawgs return to Rec Hall to take on the 18th-ranked Nittany Lions (10-4, 2-2 Big Ten) at 9 a.m. Pacific time.
Friday's match will be streamed via Big Ten Plus, while Sunday morning UW will be live on the Big Ten Network.
Despite suffering their first loss of the season last week against Illinois, UW bounced back and ended the week with a sweep of then-No. 10 Purdue. It was UW's first win over a top-10 team since beating No. 10 Oregon in the 2024 season, and first sweep of a top-10 team since the 2020 season against then-No. 7 Utah. The Huskies moved up two spots in the rankings to 20th, which is their highest since Nov. 7 of 2022 when they were also at No. 20.
The Huskies continue to succeed with a balaned attack and a strong defense that ranks third among Big Ten teams, limiting opponents to a .153 percentage. UW also ranks second in limiting opponent aces, giving up 0.94 per set, while serving 1.89 per set to rank fifth.Â
Ohio State is 2-2 in conference with wins over Northwestern and Iowa and losses to Rutgers and top-ranked Nebraska. Naomy Govou ranks seventh in the B1G with 3.77 kills per set and Emily Avshalomov is fifth in the conference in digs with 3.89 per set. Alia Schoonover is hitting .368 with 2.18 kills per set. Against Northwestern, Hannah Jones had 16 kills and hit .389. The Buckeyes are hitting .226 for the season and surrendering a .204 mark to opponents. OSU ranks third with 15.00 digs per set as a team but 17th in blocking at 1.93 per set. They give up few aces, at just 0.95 per set to rank third behind Nebraska and UW.
The Nittany Lions are 10-4 and 2-2 in conference with wins over Michigan and Iowa, and losses to Nebraska and Michigan State. Their nonconference included a sweep of then-No. 4 Stanford. The team is hitting .251 on the season and holding opponents to a .186 mark. Outside hitter Kennedy Martin is a three-time AVCA All-American including first team honors the past two years. She is third in the Big Ten with 4.28 kills per set and put down 24 last time out against Iowa in four sets. Ryla Jones ranks ninth in the league with 1.22 blocks per set and is hitting .381 with 1.49 kills per set. The other middle, Gabrielle Nichols, is hitting .370 with 1.77 kills/set and 1.21 blocks/set.Â
