UW Men To Dedicate New 'Austin J. Regier '20' Shell Friday At Conibear
April 29, 2026 | Men's Rowing
The Washington men's rowing team will officially christen and dedicate its newest rowing shell, the Austin J. Regier '20, Friday evening at Conibear Shellhouse.
The new boat, an eight-oared Empacher shell, is named in honor of Austin Regier, a Husky oarsman who unexpectedly passed away in November of 2024.
A true walk-on who learned to row at UW, Regier grew up with a family that served on Mercy Ships in Africa. He graduated from Mount Rainier High, south of Seattle, before enrolling at Washington, where he joined the rowing team.
A two-time IRA All-Academic honoree, Regier worked his way up the ranks and, after the pandemic canceled his would-be senior season in 2020, returned for a fifth year in 2021, when he earned both a Pac-12 and IRA title in the Washington four.
After earning his degree in industrial & systems engineering, Regier and Husky teammate Madison Molitor '19 changed course to another maritime sport, joining the NYYC American Magic team and competing in the 2024 Americas Cup yacht race.
Austin passed away in a free diving accident in the Philippines.
Friday night's boat dedication will be part of a larger celebration, including the Varsity Boat Club Reunion, which starts at 5:00 p.m. at Conibear Shellhouse. Prior to the Regier dedication, the women's team will also christen a new shell, named in honor of former rower and longtime head coach Jan Harville. The boat dedications begin at 6:00 p.m.
On Saturday, Washington's varsity eight will race in the new shell at the 40th Windermere Cup, squaring off with a crew from Northeastern University, and the defending Olympic gold medalists, the Great Britain National Team.
