Washington Battles UC Irvine To 1-1 Draw Sunday
August 24, 2025 | Women's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. – Washington took a first half lead and held it for the majority of the match but relented the lead in the closing minutes at Anteater Stadium, settling for a 1-1 draw to UC Irvine on Sunday.
While Washington controlled the bulk of possession early on, opportunities were difficult to come by. However, the Huskies were gifted an opportunity in the 33rd minute when Anteater keeper Laurynn Ziller was ruled to take too long to play the ball out of her 18-yard box.
Awarded an indirect free kick, Samiah Shell touched the ball into the path of Jadyn Holdenried, who rifled a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
Washington remained on the front foot throughout the rest of the match but were unable to create much in the way of another dangerous offensive threat and with just over three minutes to play, UC Irvine hit back.
After a free kick attempt was saved by Tanner Ijams, the Anteaters capitalized on the loose ball in the box, bundling it over the line to deadlock the score at a goal apiece.
Neither side was able to muster another chance in the final three minutes, with both sides settling for a draw.
Washington returns home for a pair of in-state road tilts next week, beginning with a Thursday night matchup at Seattle U on Thursday. The 7:00 p.m. kickoff will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
