July 31, 2025 | Women's Soccer, Baseball
SEATTLE - Malakhi Knight from UW Baseball and Lucy Newlin of Washington Women's Soccer were named the first Huskies to receive the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award, the conference announced on Thursday.
Each Big Ten institution nominates one male and female student-athlete that have distinguished themselves through great sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
The individuals must be fair and respectful to their opponent, and in addition, be enthusiastic about the game, enjoy playing it, and win or lose, do their absolute best at all times. The recipients shall also be active on their campus communities. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Malakhi Knight solidified himself as one of the best defensive players in the conference this season, bringing back multiple home runs while roaming centerfield for the Huskies while earning a spot on the Big Ten Defensive Team. He was also a menace on the base path for the Dawgs, collecting 24 stolen bases to go along with his five home 43 hits and five home runs.
Knight was also named to the Big Ten Sportsmanship Team for his class on and off the field and consistently led the way for the Huskies in community service efforts.
Newlin, Washington's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award representative for women's soccer, is set to begin her senior season in Purple and Gold this fall. The Granite Bay, California, product started all 19 matches for the Huskies as a sophomore, leading the team in action logged with just 38 minutes off the pitch. Newlin returned to the starting XI in UW's defensive midfield in 2024, battling through injury to appear in 14 matches with seven starts.
A two-way player on the pitch and in the classroom, Newlin also leads through both words and actions, showing consummate respect and sportsmanship for both her teammates and opponents. The NorCal native is also a leader in the community for the Dawgs, consistently rating as one of UW's top participants in community service initiatives.
