Huskies Land Most NCAA Prelim Entries Since 2021
May 22, 2025 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – The next step in the postseason for Washington Track & Field takes the Huskies to College Station, Texas for the NCAA West Preliminaries. Once again, the Dawgs have a squad of qualifiers that ranks among the largest in the NCAA, with forty-two entries at the four-day competition that runs from May 28-31.
The West Prelims are the gateway to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, with the top-48 athletes in every individual event in the western half of the country competing for 12 qualifying spots. Those who make the top-12 will move on to the NCAA Outdoor final site in Eugene, Ore. from June 11-14.
Texas A&M will host the West Prelims at E.B. Cushing Stadium, while the East Prelims will be held concurrently in Jacksonville, Fla.
Washington has 38 athletes making up its 42 entries. Four Huskies are entered in multiple events: Kaia Tupu-South (shot put & discus); Amina Maatoug (1500m & 5000m); Evan Jenkins (5000m & 10000m); and Jamar Distel (5000m & 10000m).
The UW men have 24 entries and the women have 18, while heptathlete Sofia Cosculluela advances straight through to Eugene in the heptathlon by virtue of her season-best score, which ranks seventh nationally.
The 24 men's entries are tied for the sixth-most in the NCAA. Nineteen women's entries (including Cosculluela in the heptathlon) is tied for 17th among all teams east and west.
Washington's 42 entries are its most since a record-high 49 in 2021, and its third-highest total overall, trailing the 49 from 2021 and 45 in 2019. It's up from the 39 entries from a year ago in 2024.
