LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. – Facing a pair of top-6 ranked foes, the Washington beach volleyball team fell short during the first day of the Best in the West Tournament on Friday, falling 4-1 to No. 6 Cal Poly and 5-0 to No. 2 UCLA.

The Huskies opened the tournament with an early morning matchup with the Mustangs of Cal Poly. The highlight of the day came on court two, where Brooke Balue and Niki Egan pulled out a point for UW in a three-set thriller, winning 10-21, 23-21, 15-12.

Teila Allen and Katarina Pantovic pushed Cal Poly to three sets on court one, put fell in the third set 15-7 to cede the point. Karolina Majernikova and Hannah Doyle also pushed their match to three sets on court five, falling 21-15, 16-21, 12-15 as the Mustangs secured the victory.

Washington returned to Laguna Main Beach later in the afternoon for an MPSF tilt with the Bruins. The Bruins proved too much on the day, claiming all five matches, though Balue and Egan pushed the UCLA's Maggie Boyd and Cassie Dodd to three sets.
