UW Beats No. 1 California To Win Schoch Cup At The Dual
April 26, 2025 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE – Trailing nearly the entire race, the No. 2 Washington men's varsity eight came from behind to beat No. 1 California and win the Schoch Cup in the 113th edition of The Dual Saturday morning on Montlake Cut.
Washington won the first, second and third varsity eight races, while California won in the fourth varsity eight and the freshmen eight. The UW women also won three of their six races, including the first and second varsity eights.
In the final race of the regatta, the Husky men's varsity crew, which remained in close contact with the Bears for the entire 2,000 meters, waited until the final 10 strokes or so to take its first lead, winning in a time of 5:49.759, about a half of a second in front of the Bears (5:50.297). UW finished about a deck-length ahead of the Cal shell.
"That was quite a race," said UW men's head coach Michael Callahan. "It was probably one of the better Cal Duals I've ever experienced, start to finish. I don't know if we were ever separated by more than maybe a second and a quarter. At one point I thought maybe we had let them slip too far ahead, especially seeing as there was a headwind.
"When we came to the Cut, I felt like we grabbed a little traction. Then was the game on, from the Montlake Bridge on. It's really, really impressive," Callahan added. "That's a big-time win for our guys."

Washington trailed early in the second varsity eights race, but regained the lead by the 1,000-meter mark. At the finish, Washington crossed with about a half-length of open water back to the Bears. UW won the 2V8+ race in 5:48.342, about five seconds in front of Cal.
The Huskies also came from behind in the final half of the men's third varsity eight race, and won by about six seats, with a time of 5:50.476.
California opened the day with a pair of wins, as the Bears' freshman crew beat UW by a little under two seconds, and the Cal fourth varsity eight won by about 1.5 seconds.

The Huskies and Golden Bears, who have traded the No. 1 overall ranking back and forth this spring, will see each other twice more, at the MPSF Championships in the middle of May, and at the IRA National Championship Regatta at season's end.
Meanwhile, next Saturday, Washington will host the annual Windermere Cup/Opening Day Regatta on Montlake Cut. This year, men's and women's crews from New Zealand, as well as the Indiana University women, will take on the Huskies in one of the world's greatest annual rowing events.
