March 28, 2025 | Baseball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Washington's pitchers were on fire on Friday, holding Rutgers to two hits as the Huskies earned a 3-1 victory in the series opener.
Washington improves to 12-15 and 5-2 in the Big Ten while Rutgers drops to 11-15 and 2-5 in the conference.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The first run came from a balk and the second was scored on a wild pitch to put the Huskies up 2-0.
Max Banks had a two-run cushion before taking the mound, but he didn't need it. Washington's ace tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit with two strikeouts and three walks.
The senior right-hander used only 79 pitches across his six frames, averaging a scant 13.17 pitches per inning. Following his second win of the season, Banks' ERA dropped down to 3.76 from 4.87.
Washington added an insurance run in the seventh when Colton Bower brought home AJ Guerrero from third on a sacrifice fly.
Isaac Yeager took the mound for the final three frames and picked up right where Banks left off. He faced 11 batters, two more than the minimum for his outing, and struck out six of them.
He allowed only one hit and one run, coming from a home run in the bottom of the ninth. Yeager earned his first save this season as well.
Blake Wilson recorded two of the Huskies' six hits on Friday night to lead the team. Sam DeCarlo contributed the lone extra-base hit for Washington, a double in the fourth inning.
The win pushes Washington to 5-2 in the Big Ten and makes it three straight Big Ten series opening wins for the Huskies.
Game two of the series kicks off tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. PT as the Diamond Dawgs look to claim their third Big Ten series win in a row.
