LAHAINA, Maui – The Washington women's golf team delivered an outstanding performance in round two of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, led by Vivian Lu's stellar play, which propelled her into a tie for first place.
The Huskies made a massive jump on the leaderboard, improving from three-under in round one to an impressive 15-under in round two, bringing their tournament total to 18-under, placing first heading into the final round.
The team tallied 32 birdies in the round, posting a 273, their lowest round score of the season.
"We got off to a much better start today for sure. Putts definitely started falling today," said head coach Mary Lou Mulfur. "Happy for Viv, she's been working so hard and finally nice to see it pay off. Could say the same for all of them frankly."
Lu was dominant throughout the round, carding seven birdies, including four in a row between holes four and seven. She finished the day with a career-best 65 on the par-72 course, bringing her tournament total to nine-under, tied for first.
Freshman Athena Ni followed with another strong showing, sitting in seventh place after a two-under round. She recorded five birdies, including back-to-back ones on holes five and six, bringing her tournament total to four-under.
Wendy Tang and Carmen Lim are tied for 17th at two-under, placing them third among Huskies heading into the final round. Amber Li rounds out Washington's non-individual players in 30th after a one-under round, bringing her to one-over for the tournament.
Washington's individual players also improved greatly, with Jamie Hsieh leading the group in 25th place at even par, following a two-under round. Maddie Smith and Jenny Chang sit tied for 39th at two-over, while Kennedy Knox climbed to 64th at six-over.
"We need to stick to our game plan tomorrow and focus on the process," Mulfur added. "It'll be fun to be in the hunt, as it's been a while. Great opportunity to keep growing and gaining confidence."
Washington (-18) sits at first followed by Oregon State (-9), Sacramento State (-9), and Denver (-9) in a tie for second going into the final round.
The Huskies will tee off at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in a shotgun start for the final round of the tournament.
