Miscues Costly In UW’s 4-3 Loss to Gonzaga
March 14, 2025 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Washington jumped ahead early but couldn't hold the advantage Friday against Gonzaga, falling 4-3 to start the three-game in-state series at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies committed four errors on the night, resulting in a trio of unearned Gonzaga runs.
UW starter Reilly McAdams took a no decision, surrendering just two unearned runs over six complete, largely scattering five hits. Peysen Sweeney allowed a pair of runs to garner the loss, while Josh Emanuels retired all six batters faced.
After a scoreless first from both sides, Sam DeCarlo got the Huskies on the board in the second, hammering a solo shot off the batter's eye in dead center.
The Zags responded with an unearned run in the third, but DeCarlo avoided further damage for the Dawgs, gobbling up a hard liner deep in the hole at short and delivering a seed to first baseman Julian Sanders to beat the runner.
Two frames later, UW was back on top thanks to the bat of Jackson Hotchkiss as the freshman lined a grounder over the third base bag. DeCarlo and Braeden Terry came home, pushing UW ahead 3-1 heading to the fifth.
A one-out error in the fifth allowed the Bulldogs to close the gap to one before striking for a pair in the seventh to take the lead at 4-3.
Washington loaded the bases in the ninth to put the winning run on second with one out but back-to-back strikeouts thwarted the threat as Gonzaga sealed the series opener.
