Huskies Complete Gritty Comeback, Take Down San Diego State 4-3
February 22, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – It may have taken everything and everyone, but the Huskies found a way to win Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center, taking down San Diego State 4-3 in one of the longest matches so far this season.
The 26th-ranked Huskies improve to 6-1 on the year as San Diego State drops to 4-4.
The Dawgs took an early lead with the doubles point courtesy of courts one and three. No. 60 Alexia Jacobs and Reece Carter got the first victory of a match that lasted over four hours, with a 6-2 win over SDSU's Alogo/Varul.
Erika Matsuda and Sophie Luescher fell 6-2 on court two to put the pressure on Carina Syrtveit and McKenna Koenig. The grad student/freshman pair got the job done, clinching doubles with a 6-3 match.
The Aztecs evened things up and then took a lead of their own with back-to-back singles victories on the bottom and top courts.
Liisa Varul defeated Syrtveit 6-3, 6-1 before Yasmine Kabbaj beat Matsuda 6-0, 6-4 to go up on UW, 2-1.
Carter picked up her fifth win of the season at the No. 2 spot, besting SDSU's Jo-Yee Chan, 6-4, 6-3.
Jacobs went down in a second set tiebreak 6-2, 7-6 (2) to Gloria Alogo and it was looking to be nearing the end for Washington as the remaining Huskies, Koenig and Luescher, each lost their second sets in spots four and five, respectively.
Luescher's opponent was issued a game penalty in the tiebreak on her third overruled call, putting the third set win in the hands of Luescher, 7-6.
"The end was crazy," Luescher said. "An incredible battle! Super happy that we got the win, but also a lot to take away from today for all of us to learn, grow, and get better every day."
It all came down to Koenig, who delivered. She gave the Huskies a gritty 7-5 third set to clinch.
"When I saw that I was the last match on for the clinch I knew I had to give everything I had left in the tank for my teammates," Koenig said. "That win was for them."
The Dawgs will get another opportunity to compete tomorrow at 12 p.m. at No. 29 San Diego.
