Luescher Clinches In Clutch Moments, UW Defeats No. 29 San Diego
February 23, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 26 Washington women's tennis team (7-1) earned its seventh win of the season Sunday afternoon, returning to Seattle with two more wins added to its 2025 resume after a 4-3 victory at No. 29 San Diego.
The Huskies clinched the doubles point for the seventh time this season, with No. 2 and No. 3 doubles finishing on top for Washington.
Sophie Luescher and Erika Matsuda got redemption from Saturday's loss with a 6-4 victory today over San Diego's Claudia de las Heras and Gabby Gregg.
McKenna Koenig and Carina Syrtveit concluded the weekend 2-0 as a pair, earning a 7-6 (3) win to clinch the first point on the Husky scoreboard.
The afternoon shaped up similarly to Saturday's match at San Diego State, with the Huskies and Toreros exchanging sets, forcing tiebreaks, and playing third sets down to the wire.
Reece Carter finished singles play quickly on court two, finishing the weekend 2-0 in singles.
Matsuda dropped her match to de las Heras 6-2, 6-2 as the Toreros slimmed the Husky lead, 2-1.
The back-and-forth trend continued, with Syrtveit winning 6-2, 6-4 on court six for the Huskies before Koenig fell on No. 4.
Alexia Jacobs went down a set to San Diego's Hannah Read before bouncing back to take a 6-3 second set.
The sophomore was down 5-2 in the third but went on a push to tie things 5-5. Jacobs jumped ahead to a 6-5 advantage, but Read forced a momentum shift of her own and came away with the third set tiebreak, 7-6 (3) to tie the match at 3-3.
The fate of the Huskies once again was controlled by Luescher, who snagged her first set 6-3 over Gregg before dropping a tiebreak in the second.
The senior started strong with a 4-1 lead, gave up a few games to Gregg, but ultimately pulled through to clinch the match with a 6-4 third set.
"Going into the third set after having had match points, I managed to stay present," Luescher said on her clinching match. "No matter what was happening, I just told myself to give my best and give it my all for the team."
The Dawgs will play next in their first Big Ten action, making trips to Maryland and Rutgers on March 7 and March 9, respectively. The Huskies' B1G home opener will be Friday, March 14 at noon against USC.
