
Beach Dawgs Split Opening Day

TAMPA, Fla. — The Beach Dawgs wrapped up the first day of the Sandy Spartan Showdown, splitting the day 1-1.
Washington opened its season against No. 16 Florida Atlantic. The first set win of the day came from court six, where Ella Wimmer and Karolína Majerníková, competing in the exhibition spot, secured a 21-19 victory. Sarah Wilcock and Emma Hohenauer followed with a 21-15 win in pair No. 4. Hannah Doyle and Alina Urzua battled in their first set to snag a 23-21 win. Wimmer and Majerníková grabbed a second set win to earn the exhibition victory over the Owls.
FAU responded on court four, winning the second set 22-20 to force a third, while Doyle and Urzua also dropped their second set 11-21, sending their match to a decider. S. Wilcock and Hohenauer had a smooth third set, winning 15-9 to give the Huskies their first point. The Owls quickly evened it out 1-1 with a victory on court four.
The second wave began with Brooke Balue and Niki Egan dropping the first set 16-21 in the No. 3 pair spot. The pair battled back in the second set, winning 21-14, to force a third. Katarina Pantovic and Lauren Wilcock dropped the first set 19-21 on court one. Jade Sadeiko and Teila Allen secured the first set in the No. 2 pair, 21-19.
Balue and Egan lost a close third set, 13-15. Pantovic and L. Wilcock fell to FAU's No. 1 pair, dropping the second set 12-21, allowing FAU to clinch the dual. Sadeiko and Allen lost the second set 18-21 but came back strong in the third, winning 15-10 to wrap up the first match of the day. Washington fell to Florida Atlantic, 2-3.
After a few delays due to tight matches from other schools, the Huskies were ready for game two against host Tampa under the bright lights.
In the first wave, Doyle and Urzua breezed through set one, winning 21-12. S. Wilcock and Hohenauer had a gritty first set but pulled out a win, 27-25. Doyle and Urzua gave the Huskies the first point, winning the second set 21-19. Reagan Peterson and Piper Stephenson competed in the exhibition spot, battling but ultimately falling 0-2 to the Spartans. S. Wilcock and Hohenauer put up the second point, winning set two 21-15.
The momentum carried into wave two. Balue and Egan pulled out a set one win, 21-13, dropped the second 18-21, but bounced back with a dominant 15-6 third set to clinch the dual for the Huskies. Pantovic and L. Wilcock had a close first set but powered through to win 21-19 and secured the fourth point with a 22-20 second set. Sadeiko and Allen dropped the first set 18-21 but fought back to win the second 26-24 and the third 17-15, completing a clean sweep over Tampa.
The Huskies return to action Saturday, Feb. 22, against No. 13 Georgia State at 5 a.m. PT, followed by No. 17 Florida International at 9 a.m. PT to close out the opening weekend.
