
Huskies Earn First Ranked Win, Finish 2-2 at Sandy Spartan Showdown

TAMPA, Fla. โ The Beach Dawgs wrapped up the Sandy Spartan Showdown, finishing 2-2 on the weekend after defeating No. 13 Georgia State 3-2 and falling to No. 17 Florida International 2-3 on Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies had a quick turnaround from a late day one with an early matchup against a competitive No. 13 Georgia State but came out strong. Piper Stephenson and Ella Wimmer earned the first set win of the day in the exhibition spot, 21-19. Sarah Wilcock and Emma Hohenauer followed with a 21-19 win on court four. Alina Urzua and Hannah Doyle dropped a close first set, 18-21. Stephenson and Wimmer fell in the second set, 18-21, and battled through a tight third before the match was capped at 17-17. Doyle and Urzua forced a third set with a 21-19 second-set win. S. Wilcock and Hohenauer lost their second set, 20-22, also heading to a third. A kill by S. Wilcock gave the Dawgs a 10-4 lead in the third set. Georgia State struck first, earning the point on court five as Doyle and Urzua fell 9-15. S. Wilcock and Hohenauer responded, winning their third set to tie the dual 1-1.
The second wave began with Brooke Balue and Niki Egan in pair No. 3 and Teila Allen and Jade Sadeiko in pair No. 2, both winning their first sets. Georgia State took the lead again with a win on court one, but Balue and Egan secured a straight-set victory on court three to even the dual. The match came down to Allen and Sadeiko on court two. In a back-and-forth battle, Sadeiko's big swing gave Washington a 13-10 edge, but the Panthers fought back, forcing extra points. The Dawgs clinched the dual with a 19-17 win in the third set, defeating Georgia State 3-2 for the first ranked victory of the 2025 season.
The day continued with another ranked matchup against No. 17 Florida International.
Doyle and Urzua started strong, winning 21-14 in the first set. Karolína Majerníková and Ella Wimmer followed with a 21-15 victory in the exhibition match. S. Wilcock and Hohenauer battled but dropped the first set 19-21. Doyle and Urzua secured the first point for Washington with a 2-0 win on court five, while Majerníková and Wimmer earned the exhibition win. FIU tied the dual 1-1 as S. Wilcock and Hohenauer fell in straight sets.

For the second time that day, the dual came down to the final court. Trailing in the third set, Washington rallied to cut FIU's lead to 12-11, but the Panthers closed strong, firing off four straight points to secure the dual.
The Huskies fell to No.17 FIU, 2-3, to wrap up the weekend.
